I understand basic calls and puts. What is the best strategy to try first?

Start with the Bull Call Spread or Bear Put Spread depending on your directional view. These are the clearest bridge from single-leg to multi-leg trading:

  • They use exactly two legs — easy to understand.
  • Both maximum profit and maximum loss are strictly defined.
  • The premium cost is lower than a naked long option.
  • The payoff chart is intuitive — a clear profit zone with a flat cap.

Once you are comfortable with spreads, the next natural step is an Iron Condor (which combines a Bull Put Spread and Bear Call Spread) for neutral market conditions.
