Why do companies announce buybacks?

Companies typically announce buybacks for the following reasons:

  • They believe their shares are undervalued in the market
  • They have excess cash reserves and want to return value to shareholders
  • To improve financial ratios like Earnings Per Share (EPS), since fewer shares are outstanding
  • As a tax-efficient alternative to paying dividends
  • To signal confidence in the company's prospects
