Why can't I pledge some of my holdings?
Not all securities in your portfolio are eligible for pledging. If you're trying to pledge a holding and it's not showing up or getting rejected, here are the most common reasons why:
- The security isn't on the approved list: Only securities approved by the Clearing Corporation can be pledged. If a stock, ETF, or mutual fund isn't on this list, it simply won't be available for pledging. You can check the approved list directly on the ArihantPlus app under the Pledge section, all the eligible securities in your holdings show up automatically.
- The pledge limit for that security has been reached: The Clearing Corporation sets an overall limit on how much of each security can be pledged across all clients of a broker. If that ceiling has been hit, no further pledging of that particular security is possible at that point — even if you hold it. This is a regulatory cap, not something ArihantPlus controls.
- The stock has a 100% Value at Risk (VaR): Some stocks are considered too risky by the exchange, these are typically highly volatile or illiquid securities. When a stock's VaR (a measure of potential risk) is at 100%, no margin can be offered against it, and pledging is not permitted.
A few other things to keep in mind:
- Securities that are under a lock-in period (such as recently allotted IPO shares still in lock-in) cannot be pledged until the lock-in expires
- For mutual funds, regular plans of some schemes are accepted as collateral by the Clearing Corporation, while direct plans of the same scheme may not be — so check before you try to pledge
- Mutual fund units or ETFs held in fractional quantities cannot be pledged — pledging is accepted only in whole numbers
If you're unsure why a specific holding isn't eligible, head to the Pledge section on the ArihantPlus app. It automatically shows only the securities you can pledge, so there's no guesswork involved. Still stuck? Reach out to our support team and we'll sort it out.
